The city is one of Central Europe’s biggest cities with its inhabitants of nearly two million and its one thousand years of History, it offers an exceptional adventure for tourists.
The neighbourhood is occupied since the antiquity, but the first town was established by the Romans in around 90 AD in the current Óbuda part of Budapest. The current inhabitants founded their first township here in the 9th Century. During the 10-19th centuries Buda was the capital of the country several times. At that time Budapest was 2 separate towns, the mountainous Buda on the right side and the flat Pest on the left. The city was united only in 1873, the first permanent bridge, the Chainbridge was built in 1848.
The most flourishing era of the city was around the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, when its current face and today’s streets evolved. Many of the downtown houses date back to this era. Older buildings – from the 15-17th centuries – are located mainly in the Castle area only. During the 2nd World War, aggressive bombings razed many buildings, most of them became renovated by now.
Budapest has a lot of attractions, there are several World Heritage sites, such as the Andrássy Boulevard and the millenium metro line (built in 1896 as second in Europe), the Danube riverbanks of the downtown and the Castle area with the archaic buildings and small alleys. The easiest way of viewing the sights is by taking part in a guided tour in Budapest.
The spas of the city are also world famous, its geology allows thermal waters to come to the surface in the area. This resulted in the establisment of many baths already in the middle ages, when Hungary was under Turkish rule. Some of these old Turkish spas still exist, offering a real experience.
The city also offers many green parks, one of them is the Margaret Island (Margitsziget) which is a favourite excursion place for the locals. since it is located in the middle of the city it is easy to reach, therefore many people appreciate the ambiance of this well maintained island park. The City Park is to be found behind the Heroes’ square monument, it has many opportunities for entertainment, the circus, the zoo and the luna park is here, together with a beautiful gothic replica castle, the Vajdahunyad Castle.
